On Opening Day at Bank One Ballpark, Diamondbacks’ outfielder Luis Gonzalez and Rockies’ second baseman Luis Gonzalez each homered making it only the second time in majory league history players with the same first and last names homered in the same game. The first occurance happened when Ken Griffey Jr., and his dad, Ken Griffey, playing for the Mariners, hit back-to-back homers off Angel’ hurler Kirk McCaskill in 1990.

On his 22nd birthday, Jarrod Saltalamacchia makes his major league debut. With 14 letters in his last name, the Braves backstop has the longest surname in baseball history besting 15 other major leaguers played with 13 letters in their family name.

During a tour of Fenway Park with her classmates, a Memorial Boulevard Middle School student is attacked by a 3 1/2-pound red-tailed hawk known to nest at the historic ballpark. The the 13-year old eighth grader from Bristol, Connecticut, who is treated for small scratch on her scalp at a local hospital, has familiar name to Red Sox fans, Alexa Rodriguez, similar to the much detested third baseman of the Yankees, who also is 13 (uniform number).
